Securing a European patent through the EPO is a major achievement, but the protection only extends as far as you take it. After the grant is published in the European Patent Bulletin, you have just three months to validate the patent in each chosen EPC member state. Nine states (Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Monaco, Switzerland/Liechtenstein, and others that share an EPO official language) require no translation at all. Once fees are paid, the patent takes effect automatically.
Roughly 13 other states ask only for a translation of the claims—the legally binding core of the patent—plus a modest publication fee.
The remaining states still need the full specification translated.
